In some cases of the Left Hand Path (of Return) there is atheism.  Atheism means not having a god (therefore idol / representation) to worship. It does not mean not believing in something beyond the 5 senses of the  5 elements  therefore void of egoism. A more accurate word for he who does not believe in anything beyond the senses is  infidel . However,  faith in the higher power of the elements  definitely helps - although should succeed lack of desire for life (detachment) and  therefore aspiration, and should definitely not be an attachment or social norm or even chore or habit - because what matters most is detachment from worldliness including to your method or religion or any spiritual knowledge, and even skill. Detachment from everything is needed, for your method (religion) is only a means (one of many, and yet still not necessary, and yet only if done comsistently, deeply, and with the right spirit / Direction) to The Ultimate. Therefore: 1) Aspire for Higher (Self over self) 2)  Model  the 5 Elements (act like them) 3)  Mirror  the 5 Elements (be around them) You are not the false (ego / separate) self, you are the True (Spirit / united) Self, for the body is only an avatar. You are beyond mind; you are  unknowable . You are the observer , not the doer; a Being not a Doing.
